8th July 2021 Hiking - Walking: Holywells Park and Ipswich waterfront Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered: 3 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Thursday 8th July - walk ***** - Holywells Park and Ipswich Waterfront – sunny periods. Had to take Mag to see an optician at Ipswich Hospital after Specsavers picked up something a few weeks ago, a bit of a worrying time! With her appointment at 11.05 we decided to pack a picnic to make a day of it, hopefully to celebrate some good news? Managed to park free in a side road nearby and walked to the hospital, then Mag disappeared for two hours, the longer she was away the more dire I thought the outcome was but she returned with dilated pupils and good news, she had a mole in her eye which is harmless, so relief all round:) We were now starving and drove the short distance to Holywells Park, one of our favourites having not been for ages! There were dark menacing clouds appearing now amongst the sunny periods and we had our fingers crossed it would not rain as we entered the park at the Landseer Road entrance. This is a beautiful little park surrounded by industrial parks, housing estates and near Ipswich dock but it is absolutely beautiful, full of large very old trees, rolling grass and stream and natural lakes full of wildlife:) You follow a duck weed covered stream to the first lake and quickly spot a fishing Heron followed by an Egret up a tree and a Cormorant drying out but the star was a family of coots, the fluffy had such big feet! Turning by the small stream we used to take the child-minded kids we looked after many years ago to fish for tiddlers with nets to the other pond well known for its Kingfishers, sadly none today. We found a nice bench for our picnic and were entertained by a family of rats eating food left for the ducks which there were several including loads of youngsters as well as gulls, coots, moorhens and a fly past from the Egret and Cormorant. We made friends with a few passing dogs and had a nice chat to a mother and her teenage son who were feeding the ducks:) Well rested we headed up the lovely gardens with it stunning old glass conservatory carrying on to do a circuit of the park before heading down for a stroll along Ipswich Waterfront, home of the university, hotels, bars and coffee shops, a hive of activity with old barges moored as well as loads of motor cruisers and yachts, always a good photo opportunity:) It was actually quite breeze here but I was not missing windsurfing as I have been out the previous four days. We made it to the end of the docks before retracing our steps back to the park, van and home via the country lanes through Nacton and Levington! Home in time for our usual cuppa and cake, the cats were also pleased to see us! Top day :) Photo Album Here Holywells Park Here |
